Brunton was elected to the Division of Fluid Dynamics Fellowship for his “significant research contributions to the modeling and control of fluid dynamics, including pioneering the use of machine learning to discover governing equations and reduced-order models from data.” He was also recognized for innovative undergraduate, graduate and public science education.

Brunton is a Data Science Fellow at the eScience Institute and co-directs the AI Institute in Dynamic Systems, which is focused on developing fundamental technology in AI and ML for dynamic systems; applying that technology to real-world problems; and shaping educational and workforce development pathways. One of the Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers in 2022 and 2023, he also has a YouTube channel that simplifies the mathematical fundamentals behind data-driven engineering concepts like machine learning and dynamical systems.

The APS Fellowship recognizes members for their outstanding efforts to advance physics. Each year, no more than one half of one percent of APS membership are elected as Fellows.
